When news like thisand this show up in my morning news dump, I can’t help but wonder if we’re really facing a return to the draft. And if this news is any indicator, I wonder if Americans are going to be willing to go along with it.
I have a feeling this link and this link may be important ones to have.
At my age, and given that I’m openly gay and in a relationship, I probably wouldn’t be eligible, but perhaps I could serve as a stop on the underground railroad for those who want no part of the farce.
The draft isn’t actually much to worry about-before the republicans in Congress would back the Bush administration’s request to attack Iraq, they passed a bill prohibiting conscription from being instituted to provide troops. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that many of them dodged the draft, or at least have friends and family who did, and have seen the media expose it again and again after the fact-which means that the media will be watching to make sure that the war pigs cannot keep their own kids out of the draft this time around.
What we really need to worry about is the way this is going to hurt America’s National Guard in the long run. Guard members get few benefits compared to the rest of the military, and in exchange the government agrees to only call them up for national emergencies. This is the second time a Bush administration has betrayed the National Guard forces, many of them have already stated that they will not re-enlist later, and having seen the guard betrayed in two Middle East wars, the next generation of potential guardsmen won’t be lining up outside recruiting offices.
