Dean on MA Supremes

From Blog for America.

Howard Dean hit all the right notes in his statement about the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriages, if you ask me:

One way or another, the state should afford same-sex couples equal treatment under law in areas such as health insurance, hospital visitation and inheritance rights.

There will be those who try to use the decision today to divide Americans. Instead, this decision should be viewed as an opportunity to affirm what binds us together — a fundamental belief in the equality of human beings, regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation.

Could it be any simpler than that? Isn’t equal treatment under the law what it’s all about? Shouldn’t my family have all the same rights and protections as the family down the street?

You’d think it would be a no brainer, but if people in liberal Vermont were up in arms when their supreme court released a similar decision four years ago, then obviously the rest of the country may not be ready for it yet. I think Massachusetts is, but I don’t think the country as a whole is ready to wake up and see what I consider to be a given.
