Occasionally, someone recognizes a bad idea before it’s put into action. This time it was a credit card bearing image of WTC flag-raising.
A credit card bearing the iconic picture of three firefighters raising the U.S. flag amid World Trade Center rubble was removed from circulation Friday over concerns it might offend victims’ relatives.
The MBNA MasterCard was launched at the request of a Sept. 11-related charity, with a percentage of every credit card purchase going to a pair of such charities. Fewer than 500 of the cards were issued, and those cardholders will instead receive generic cards.
“Nothing we did with this card was done to offend the victims’ families,” said Jim Donahue, a spokesman for MBNA. “But if one was offended, one is too many.”
Donahue offered an apology from the company to anyone upset by the cards but stressed that MBNA had not made a penny off of the specially issued credit cards.
Sure, it was a 9/11-related charity. But raising money on the corpses of 9/11? Tacky, at best.
That’s right, if one is offended, one is too many. That’s what I was thinking when I saw/read about Bush’s new tv ads.
