Let ‘Em Dangle
For the time being, it looks like the U.N.—among others—is going to leave Bush & Co. twisting in the wind, or rather the desert breeze, when it comes to Iraq.
Kofi Annan, the United Nations secretary general, dealt a major blow to the United States-led coalition yesterday after virtually ruling out sending a large UN team to the country “for the foreseeable future” because of the upsurge in violence and kidnappings.
Russia, France and the Czech Republic yesterday urged their citizens to leave the country as the hostage crisis deepened with four Italians and a Frenchman kidnapped.
Russia’s largest civilian contractor also said it was evacuating all its 370 staff and Japan’s defence minister cancelled a visit to troops.
Can’t say that I blame them much.
