I’m going through my saved items in Bloglines, things I saved to blog about later, and posting about what I find there. This one is an idea I read on feministe that caught my eye because one of the things my coach asked me to do between visits is to take time each day to think of one thing I did that I liked or thought was good.
This is a bit more challenging. But Lauren did it, so I’m going to list five thing I like about myself.
- My voice. I like to sing, and I sing around the house all the time. I think I’m pretty good at it, and it just makes me happy.
- My writing. It’s always been something I enjoy, whether for creative purposes, self expression, or self discovery.
- My smile. It’s hard to believe there was a time when I never smiled in pictures. I thought my smile was awkward or unattractive. Then a friend took a picture of me right after making me laugh, and I saw it. I realized that I liked my smile, and that it looked good on me.
- My love of reading. I’m a voracious reader. I think it started a a means of escape, and sometimes it still is. But now it’s also another means of learning and discovering new things.
- My resilience. I’ve been up, and I’ve been down. One thing I can say about myself is that when I’ve been down, I haven’t stayed down. I’ve always gotten back up. I like to think that all of my experiences teach me something, and no matter what happens, if I can walk away having learned something, and apply that knowledge down the line, then it was worth being down for a bit.
My resilience.
When I was in fact too young to understand them properly, I read some stories about the Holocaust. One thing remained with me: an elderly survivor who said of his life, “There’s a certain dignity in surviving.”
That little wisdom has sustained me through many ups and downs of my own, so I share it now for whatever it may be worth to you.
