		<description>This is a wonderful post. I&#039;ve done a lot of genealogy for my family, but of course it has been much, much easier for me to collect names and dates. But after a while, it all becomes kinda abstract.

I think you&#039;ve uncovered the essence of what it&#039;s all about - understanding the stories and events that shaped your family&#039;s *story*, which is so incredibly important. These experiences are what shapes who we are. Lately I&#039;ve been focusing more on trying to uncover those experiences. If all I can learn about someone is a name and a few dates, it really isn&#039;t that much of a discovery. But on the rare occasion in which I can get a glimpse into something that happened in that person&#039;s life, that is the real treasure.

I wish I had tape-recorded my great-grandparents oral history when they were still alive.

Anyway, again - a very lovely post.
