My dear friend Katharine emailed me and asked me to blog about this. It’s the kind of thing I’d usually blog about, but I’ve been so caught up in the presidential election that I’ve missed some of what’s going on in the states, namely my homestate (when I claim it): Georgia.

On November 2nd, Georgia is set to vote on its own anti-gay marriage ammendment.

Here’s an excerpt from Katharine’s post.

Just speaking for myself, I wholly and completely support gay unions. I have so many friends in loving relationships who are just as committed and devoted to their partners as I am to my husband. They deserve the same rights and recognition under the law, and they deserve those rights now. Not ten years from now, not ten days from now, not ten minutes from now. Right now, at this very moment.

Please, do what you can to make those rights a reality. Vote NO to Amendment 1 on November 2nd in Georgia.

Right now, polls are showing that about 70% of Georgians support this amendment. If you’re in Georgia, and you’ve been reading this blog, you might be voting no on this amendmenet. At least I hope so. But there’s still something you can do. Talk to your friends and family, and explain to them what this amendment would mean for gay & lesbian families in the state. Tell them that it’s about people having equal right, plain and simple, and that this amendment is something fairminded Georgians should vote against.

If you’re in Georgia and you’re considering voting for this amendment, ask youself just one question. Do you believe in equal right for all Americans? If you really do, then you should have a hard time supporting this amendment. How does creating a second class of citizenship in Georgia protect anybody’s family? The truth is it stands a better chance of endangering a number of Georgia families, maybe including people you know and love.

The truth is, this amendment ensures discrimination against gays & lesbians, as sure as “Jim Crow” codified discsrimination and created two different classes of citizens.

If you’re in Georgia, vote “no” on 1.
