Parents might talk a lot of hate, but not go the extra step into actual abuse, whereas teenagers lack certain inhibitory mechanisms. I've certainly seen kids amplify parental racial and homophobic prejudices before. I wonder how much of this is kids acting out what they hear at home. It's a commonplace that if adults treated each other the way kids do, there'd be a lot more tort lawyers. I've certainly seen children amplify parental racial and anti-glbt prejudices before.
