This one came to me from Tom, a regular reader and frequent commenter. I’ve already said how I feel about Anderson Cooper. But here’s something I didn’t know. I guess I’m just the last to know. It can’t be that much of a secret if it’s already known in the media that Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbilt’s son.
From an article about Gloria’s new book, a memoir of her romances:
CNN anchor Anderson Cooper had some initial difficulty reading the book; Vanderbilt is his mother.
“You know, I was definitely like, I was like, ‘Oof, too much information for me.’”
Cooper says Vanderbilt was not like anyone else’s mom. “She would show up at, like, report day at my school where…parents have to go in and get the report card, in sort of like a beaver skin purple Zandra Rhodes coat. And I’d be like ‘Mom, you know, can’t you just like wear tweed or something? Just like, tone it down?’ And now I’m very happy and proud that she doesn’t, and she’s completely unique.”
Interesting, isn’t it? I’m trying to imagine growing up with someone like Ms. Vanderbilt for a mother, and I just can’t picture it. But it certainly must have been interesting.
T.,
Reading your earlier post, now knowing that Andy’s the ‘little girl lost”s heiress’s son, gives one an amazing insight on aspects of meaning in the quote you posted of Anderson’s interview of Falwell.
Your quote was this….
The struggle over little girl Gloria in the 30s hinged on whether her mother was fit to raise the girl since the woman was a ‘blatant lesbian.’
Gloria was taken from her mother, but did eventually inherit a huge fortune. From the article I sent you, we learn that Gloria has an abiding great love for her mother.
Anderson is very likely to be gay himself, from what I read. But it is also clearly the case that Anderson was born into a family that has a passionate interest in gay rights, and a keen interest in inheritance rights.
This also means, I think, that if Anderson is straight, he is not going to go out of his way to make sure everybody knows he’s not gay. With his background, he is going to know that being gay is a source of pride.
