Blogging on the Clock

Yet another article about my “pet issue” has appeared on CNet. This time it’s an FAQ about blogging on the job. If you have a blog, and a job—especially if your blog isn’t your job—there’s some stuff here that migiht be of interest. Such as the following.

Can blogging hurt my career?
If you’re already employed, your blog could get you fired.

OK. That’s obvious, but there really is some interesting stuff here.

How risky is blogging really?
Blog firings are relatively rare. In a recent survey of 279 human resource professionals by the Society for Human Resources Management, just 3 percent of companies reported disciplining bloggers and none reported firing anyone for blogging.

Trust me, it’s worth checking out if the issue is something you’re concerned about.

I worked for a “progressive” retailer for almost 10 years and their Human Resources department was nothing more than a front for their full time efforts to avoid litigation brought by employees and former employees. In the end, I was “fired” a day before the company announced a downsizing eliminating my position, leaving me with little more than a fair judgement from a state unemployment board and 6 months of unemployment. No matter what they claim to be, these people act in the best interest of the company, even when they dance on the ethical line.
