Picked this up from a comment over at Daddy, Papa and Me: the judge in the California same-sex marriage ruling is a Catholic Republican appointee.
Supporters of same-sex marriage found an ally Monday in San Francisco Judge Richard Kramer — a Catholic Republican appointed to the bench by a former GOP governor.
What’s interesting here is that the positions of his party and his church on the same-sex marriage issue appear not to have affected his ruling. And he’s an appointee, which means he doesn’t have to worry about getting re-elected, and thus having to please the majority when deciding matters of justice. If you as me, that’s a good thing, because sometimes what the majority wants is the exact opposite of justice; and there has to be a better reason to deny justice to a group of people than that granting it would make too many people “uncomfortable.” If there’s not, then it’s just bigotry written into law.
