Your Life Is Not Your Own

They don’t waste much time. From Democratic Veteran comes news of what’s afoot in Wisconsin.

Attention Wisconsin voters, Republicans in your legislature are trying to take away your right to an Advanced Medical Directive-

“Legislation currently before the Wisconsin Senate allows doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical personnel who morally disagree with the guidelines regarding feeding and hydration tubes to ignore living wills and advance directives. The legislation already has passed the Republican-controlled Assembly and is likely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate.”

Couldn’t find a link to the specific post Dem Vet referenced, but found an article about the proposed WI law.

Several health care professionals joined Rep. Jean Hundertmark Tuesday to support the introduction of her 2005 “Conscience Protection Act.”

The bill from the Clintonville Republican is aimed at protecting doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health care workers from being discriminated against or sued because they follow their consciences in refusing to take part in procedures “that are a planned, calculated destruction of human life,” Hundertmark said.

So, if your doc is a holy-roller, your advance directive might not be worth the paper it’s written on. So my questiont to the wingnut supporters is the same one Tim asked earlier: are you ready to spend 15 or more years in that bed? Because that’s where your leaders want to put you. And they can use that advance directive of yours to clean you up after they change your diaper.

And hospitals will just LOVE to keep you alive longer in a vegegative state because someone will have to pay them to do it…

There is HUGE money in this for the Hospitals and HUGE loses for insurance providers… which in turn will mean higher rates.

I am a cancer survivor. I have a living will. I do not see how a Doctor’s RELIGIOUS beliefs trump my legal right to refuse medical treatment. What is next? Manditory treatment? Manditory “mental health” services for dissenters?

    Feh!

Of course, it’s illegal for hospitals to discriminate against the pathologically religious, but in WI, it’s poised to become legal for the pathologically religious to discriminate among their obligations. Nice.
