Just a while ago, the California Supreme court ruled that business have to treat same-sex couples (in domestic partnerships) the same as married couples. Now it’s becoming clear that businesses are going to have to make some changes in order to comply with the ruling.
John Davidson, legal director for the Lambda Legal Defence and Education Fund which represented the couple, said: "The ruling will have a far-reaching impact across a wide range of businesses.
"If domestic partners want to buy a house and go the bank for a loan, the bank wouldn’t look at their income jointly. They won’t be able to do that any more."
He said car insurers would have to offer registered gay couples the same discounts married couples get. Health clubs which offer discounts to spouses will also have to start offering the same deals to same-sex partners.
These seem like little things but, as with most things in life, the the little things add up to big differences as time goes by. Just another example of the myriad perks, priviledges, and protections that heterosexual couples and families take for granted on a daily basis.
