Rehnquist RIP

He’s dead. I just came downstairs from helping the hubby make the bed and found that MadTV was interrupted with a news bulletin on his death.

Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Saturday evening at his home in suburban Virginia, said Supreme Court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg.

A statement from the spokeswoman said he was surrounded by his three children when he died in Arlington.

"The Chief Justice battled thyroid cancer since being diagnosed last October and continued to perform his dues on the court until a precipitous decline in his health the last couple of days," she said.

Rehnquist was appointed to the Supreme Court as an associate justice in 1971 by President Nixon and took his seat on Jan. 7, 1982. He was elevated to chief justice by President Reagan in 1986.

His death ends a remarkable 33-year Supreme Court career during which Rehnquist oversaw the court’s conservative shift, presided over an impeachment trial and helped decide a presidential election.

The death [gives] President Bush his second court opening within [f]our months and sets up what’s expected to be an even more bruising Senate confirmation battle than that of John Roberts. (emphasis added)

When I checked, CNN didn’t have it up yet, and MSNBC only had a headline, and nothing else.

  1. Ron says:

I am REALLY going to miss that silly, reprehensible, Gilbert-&-Sullivan-styled, gold-striped robe he decided he’d start wearing in public. How asinine. I suppose his adoring, constipated cronies denied he was senile, but I doubt the denials were true. And now Bush will attempt to inflict even greater problems on this country in the wake of the incompetence and inaction he has clearly demonstrated over Hurricane Katrina. If THIS debacle does not mobilize progressive individuals in this nation, then nothing will — and we will then deserve the garbage we are getting. It’s that simple. End of Rant.

  2. Oh so sad, but let the games begin.
