I think that this uncaring brand of conservatism has its roots in Calvinist predestination doctrine – they believe that God shows which people have been "saved" by giving them more wealth than the "damned" poor…

It’s not just about people better off being unwilling to help the poor, but also their willingness to exploit the poor and vulnerable to maintain the status quo. The current inequalities of status depend on the rich benefiting from the exploitation of people with less economic power.
“Low prices” at Wal-Mart and the grocery store come from low wages paid to employees and the people who harvest our food and make our clothing.

At the same time the upper class is talking about the need to “empower” people to improve their own lives, they oppose increases in the minimum wage, measures to ensure affordble housing and health care and regulations requirng a safe work environment because such measures will “hurt business” and be bad for the “economy” (read:profits).

How exactly are poor people supposed to “help themselves?” Oh right, like Bill Reilly says, by simply deciding to not “be poor.”

the flaw in the republican logic is most clear via children. all poor children have done to "earn" their plight is get born. do they "deserve" to drown, too, republicans?

additionally, people with severe disabilities — shame on them for being poor. how dare they get multiple sclerosis or epilepsy or any number of diseases one can’t control. drown them all, say the republicans. clean up public housing.
