War on Santa

Looks like some people are taking no prisoners in the “war on Xmas.” Try explaining that one to the kid who’s looking forward to a visit from “Santa, bloody Santa.” One wonders what they’ll do to the easter bunny come April.

And are you sure you want to put that tree up? It’s probably not in their bible either, and it may not be too far fetched for the “war on Xmas” to morph into a war on non-believers. Congress, having nothing more important to do, will take up a bill to protect Xmas (that’s three times now, so let ‘em come and get me).

H. RES. 579

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

December 6, 2005

Mrs. JO ANN DAVIS of Virginia (for herself, Mr. BARTLETT of Maryland, Mr. GOODE, and Mr. JONES of North Carolina) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Government Reform

RESOLUTION

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the symbols and traditions of Christmas should be protected.

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and

Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That the House of Representatives–

(1) recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;

(2) strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and

(3) expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions.

Sure it’s a toothless bill this time, but at least it keeps them from having to deal with the 100 religious activists arrested at the capitol today while protesting the House Republicans’ budget and its cuts in social programs. (Those christians probably didn’t get the memo about the connection between wealth and moral virtue, or poverty and the lack of moral virtue.) But there’s always next year or the year after that, and when inmates are running the asylum, the sane are not safe. Better to at least appear crazy.
