WordPress 2.0 & the Theme

The word is out that a new version of WordPress will hit the streets in a matter of days. For me, that means struggling with the “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” principle vs. being an earlier adopter. And no matter how much I consider the frustrations that go along with the latter choice — themes that don’t work with the new version, plugins that haven’t been upgraded, etc. — my brain short circuits, I think “new, shiny, pre-e-e-e-e-ty,” and next thing ya know I’m cursing between bouts of pounding my fists against my forehead.

That means I’ll be able to hold out for at least a few days before I submit and upgrade.

But that’s also probably going to mean some changes on the blog once again. There are some things I like about the current theme, but I find that I miss some of the flexibility of a three-column layout. So, I’m pouring through themes to see what else might work, and trying to decide whether to leave well enough alone and stick with the new theme or go back to previous theme. Then it occured to me to ask my readers what they think.

So take my poll, and tell me what you think. (Pardon the ads.)

Ah, the horrors of LVS (Latest Version Syndrome).  Sadly, I’ll probably be upgrading over Christmas, too, now that I know about the release.

I’m getting to switch over the WordPress here soon (as soon as I find a host), but not so sure I want to go with the brand-spanking new version.

With my limited knowledge of HTML, my guess is that the old one will be hard enough to figure out. Last thing I need are the inevitable bugs that come with it.

And for the record, I voted for you to stand pat until the new one gets perfected.

  3. If it’s any consolation, I upgraded my 1.5.2 blog to 2.0 RC3 today without any problems. I figured that some bits of my wonky custom theme would break, or maybe some of the more esoteric plugins that I use. But everything went smoothly, and I haven’t run into any problems so far.
