Blog Death?

Update: The problem appears to be fixed for the moment. Time will tell.

This blog may be dead to me. My ISP continues to have network problems, so I can’t reach it from home. Now, apparently, I can’t reach it from work either. I can post to it, though some backdoor access I have set up, but I can’t edit or make changes. I can’t assign categories or tags to a post. Everything goes up as “General.” I can’t even look at it to see if this post goes up or not, or to even see what it looks like, if there’s a problem with a link. etc. I can’t approve comments from first time commenters, etc. I can’t do anything to it from either of the locations where I spend most of my time. So, I have a very, very, very, very small and infrequent window in which I can really do much of anything with it for the foreseeable future.

After endless problems with hosting, this may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. I realize, of course, that I’m writing this out of anger and frustration at the moment, but it seems I keep having one technological problem after another with this blog. I haven’t heard anything from my ISP about the network issue or if/when it will be worked out. Now I apparently have to find time to journey out to a Starbucks or Borders, or find a wireless connection I can hijack and pray that it works. Between work and family, I’m sure I can find maybe an hour or two a week to journey out to a location where I can actually reach my own blog.

I’m not sure what my technological solutions are at this point, other than to wait and home things fix themselves, at least until they fall apart again. I’d go back to Typepad, but it has significant issues of it’s own, as does Blogger. And I’m not sure I have another server move in me, particularly since there’s only that small, infrequent window in which I can contact the server anyway.

So, this is my technological rant. It’s the only thing you’ll probably hear from me today, or tomorrow, etc., given the significant technological roadblocks facing my blogging at this point, unless someone has a suggestion or recommendation.

I’m not sure if it will help, but one of the reasons I do use Livejournal (for a much smaller and less visited and generally non-political blog) is because I’ve never had difficulty with connecting to and/or uploading to it no matter what ISP I’m using or where I am.

Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure to do what you have on this blog on Livejournal would require a paid LJ account. LJ isn’t that expensive, admittedly, but costs would be involved.

My own blog, http://www.livejournal.com/users/mariness, is a free LJ and frankly isn’t much as far as design is concerned.  However, the writer Cherie Priest has a paid account, and she’s done considerably more with things here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/wicked_wish

Wow … that sucks more than I can even begin to comprehend.

You can NOT let this place die. Your too damned good of a writer and I find your takes entirely too interesting for you to stop now!!

    I suggest you switch ISPs … 🙂

To be honest, I’m not sure how long it will take to get it all sorted out. At this point, if it weren’t for the T-Mobile hotspots at Borders and Starbucks I’d have no blog at all.

I’m not sure if switching ISPs would help matters any, if it’s a problem with a particular router, since I have no way of knowing whether I’d pick an ISP that  pointed to that same problem router. Besides, I thought switching servers and hosts would solf the problem, and it did until another thornier problem popped up. Given the luck I’ve had with technological issues, I shudder to think what new problems I’d run into after all the trouble of switching ISPs.

I referred the matter to my ISP days ago, only to get a tech support person that insisted I jump through a number of flaming hoops (deleting my cookies, clearing my cache, trying another browser) before even listening to the information I had, and then only told me that he’d refer the matter to their engineers. I then sent an email via their support site.

I’ve heard nothing, and the problem is not fixed. I don’t know how long it will take to fix. For what it’s worth, I’ll escalate with a phone call tonight.

However, right now, trying to blog here is about like trying to jump double-dutch with a boulder strapped to my back. I haven’t even read any blogs today, because there are too many barriers to blogging about what I’m reading.

So, I don’t know what’s going to happen. No idea.

For the time being why not ‘guest post’ on someone else’s blog. Shut this one down for the time being and put up a link to where your temping at so people can still connect with you.

Then with your posting on another blog you can dive into your blog and work out whatever need to be done and not worry about down time. You can always copy all of your new posts over after you fix your problem.

I’m more than willing to give you posting privileges over at my place. Just let me know what you need.
