Father of the Groom

The hubby had a meeting tonight, so Parker and I were at home together. It was nice to have that time because I was out of town for half of last week, but also because the evening held one of those moments you might file under “Kids Say the Darndest Things.”

It went something like this. We were watching one of the kids’ shows Parker watches before bedtime, when all of a sudden he pipes up with a declaration. The conversation that followed was just priceless.

“Daddy, I’m gonna marry Jessica.” [His favorite teacher, who just got engaged.]

“Oh really?”

“Yeah. But after Oscar [his best friend] marries Jessica.”

“Yeah?” At this point I’m hiding a big grin behind my hands.

“Yeah.”

“Well, at least you’re taking turns.”

I don’t know if this means his going to end up liking girls (though I guess there’s about a 90% chance that he will), but one thing I do know: with a kid this good looking, whether he likes boys or girls, somebody probably will snatch him up and walk him down the aisle someday.

Let’s hope that if he ends up preferring boys, he will have the option of walking down the aisle. Do you think we’ll conquer this bigotry in our lifetime? Some days I’m hopeful and others I’m pessimistic.

Well, I have a kid. So no matter how bad things get I have to have hope. It comes with the job description, and sometimes it’s the only thing that keeps me going.
