MLK, A Dream Deterred

Monday, January 16th, 2006

Imagine, for a moment, anyone saying stuff like this today.

Imagine

Thursday, December 8th, 2005

A light went out in the world today. At least, I think so. It occurred to me this morning that it was 25 years ago today that John Lennon was murdered. I can’t say anything about him that hasn’t already been said. So I’ll just say that, whatever other issues there may be about him, […]

2K, Too Much

Saturday, October 22nd, 2005

Wasn’ t it just a few months ago that we were marking another morbid milestone of the Iraq war, as the number of U.S. casualties passed 1,500? Well, brace yourself. We’re about to hit 2,000.

How many more U.S. soldiers and Iraqis must give their lives before our government finally admits that the war against Iraq […]

Wrong for Being Right

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

I think Dave Pell has kinda misread this Christopher Hitchens piece that blasts the anti-war protesters for…uh…not being pro-war enough, as near as I can tell. Betwee all the blustering — you can almost see the spittle that must have collected on Hitchen’s monitor as he wrote this piece — and accusing the protester of […]

The Long March to the Muddle

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

I’ve been catching up on articles about yesterday’s anti-war marches in D.C. and elswhere, as well as bits about the counter protesters, and there’s recurring theme that’s occurred to me, though I didn’t get it until I red this editorial from the Orange County Register.
Ms. Sheehan’s statements have sometimes gone beyond understandable […]

But Ya ARE Pro-War, Blanche! Ya Are!

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

As I was catching up on the news this afternoon, something jumped out at me in this Washington Post article about the counter-protestors at yesterday’s anti-war march in D.C.

Deb Meyer of South Bend, Ind., was standing next to Ellsworth and holding a picture of her son Jason, who was killed April 8, 2003, in Iraq. […]

A Majority on the March?

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Alas, we didn’t make it to the march. We’ve been running around doing errands and stuff in Maryland. (Besides, the hubby is going to a rally tomorrow to keep the Moral Majority folks out Montgomery County Schools — where Parker will be going when he’s old enough.) But I did find this picture on the […]

Getting His Phil

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

This has been blogged about almost everywhere since yesterday, so I didn’t cover it. But then a reader sent me a link. If you haven’t seen it already, head over to Crooks and Liars to see Phil Donahue administer a truly beautiful smackdown to Bill O’Reilly, on O’Reilly’s own show. You can also read the […]

Not Exactly a Lunatic Fringe

Friday, September 23rd, 2005

In that last post, I linked to an article about a poll showing than fewer than half of Americans think the war in Iraq is winnable. I cited that one because I couldn’t locate another piece that showed how many people support ending — or at least starting to end — the war in […]

Mr. President, a Word Please…

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

Wow.
The survey also found that Sheehan, who has been protesting the war outside Bush’s ranch near Crawford, Tex., has become the most visible symbol of the anti-war movement. Fully three in four Americans have heard or read about her.
Sheehan met last year with Bush at an event for military families and has been seeking […]

Sweet Lady Joan

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Looks like Baez came through.
Folk singer Joan Baez has joined anti-war protesters near US President George W. Bush’s ranch to meet military families who want troops pulled out of Iraq. "You know in the first march I went on against the war in Vietnam there were 10 of us," Baez […]

More Compassionate Conservatism

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

Via TalkLeft comes another example of compassionate conservatism. The pro-Bush demonstrators have arrived in Crawford, Texas. Reports are they had their own special chant for Cindy Sheehan as she depart Crawford to go to the side of her ailing mother:
"We don’t care."

Another fine example of W’s America. Kinda sums up this administration perfectly.

Diamonds & Rust

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

I know that not long ago I lamented the return of another old face from the anti-Vietnam war moment. However, I can’t help but cheer news that Joan Baez will play at Camp Casey. I’ve been an admirer of hers since I read her autobiography years ago. Back in college, when I attempted to teach […]

Insulting Intelligence

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

Via LinkFilter comes the story of another mother who’s son died in Ira; a mom who objects to Cindy Sheehan’s protest.
Michael Fasnacht, 25, of Mankato, believed the mission was about defending freedom, spreading democracy and defeating terrorism, said Marny Fasnacht, 58, of Janesville.
To suggest that he chose to risk his life for a cause […]

Sheehan Leaves Camp

Thursday, August 18th, 2005

This is everywhere by now, but just in case you haven’t read it somewhere else, Cindy Sheehan is leaving her campsite in Crawford, Texas, to go to the side of her ailing mother in Los Angeles.
The grieving woman who started an anti-war demonstration near President Bush’s ranch nearly two weeks ago said Thursday she […]
