Viva Toronto

Friday, October 21st, 2005

No, that’s not an Elvis statue. That’s an Elvis impersonator, performing outside Toronto’s Eaton Center. He wasn’t dancing and lip-syncing, though. He was striking various poses as Elvis’ music played. I think this one was “Don’t Be Cruel.” Parker was somewhat perplexed and didn’t know what to make of it. There’s another pic here.

Where Not to Stay In Toronto

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

Well, one bus ride, one flight, and two taxi rides later we are in a hotel in Toronto. Note that I said a hotel, not our hotel, Town Inn Suites. That’s because when we arrived at our hotel, where we’d made reservations well in advance (over a month in advance, because the hubby does everything […]

Travelin’

Thursday, October 20th, 2005

We’re on the road — or, more appropriately, in the air — today. Posting may be very light, but I’ve lined up some stuff to post while we’re in route.

Unquestioning Obedience

Sunday, February 27th, 2005

Here’s something I hadn’t thought of before: questioning why we have to show an ID to get on an airplane. I just accepted it, and whip mine out whenever it’s asked for at the airport. Not so with John Gillmore—who happens to be guy who founded the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He asks why.
John Gilmore’s splendid […]

You Can Go Home Again

Monday, December 29th, 2003

But don’t expect it to be the same. Though we went to very different places for the holidays, Mark at Zeitzeuge made a couple of comments about his trip home that also ring true about my own.
–You realized during your holiday with family, that things aren’t the same. Even though you had a wonderful time, […]

Weary Traveler

Sunday, December 28th, 2003

This was Parker, sitting in his Papa’s lap on our flight to Atlanta, worn out from a whirwind holiday of meeting grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I just happened to look over, and decided this moment was too cute not to be preserved. So, I whipped out the Palm Zire 71 and snapped it.

Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag?

Sunday, December 28th, 2003

As we were waiting for our gate to open at the Augusta Regional Airport, this sign caught my eye, and I wondered “What is a male/female purse? Do bags have gender?”

And to All a Good Night …

Wednesday, December 24th, 2003

Well, this will probably be the last post of the day, and most of tomorrow, as we pack up the Republic and head south for Parker’s first visit with my family. It should be interesting, to say the least. My folks have never accepted my being gay, for religious reasons. But I’m coming home with […]

Pretty Hate Machine

Friday, November 14th, 2003

Calpundit has an interesting post about the discussion of “Bush-hatred” that seems to abound these days, in particular conservative spokepersons, who - while acknowledging that it was largely “hatred” that drove many of the attacks on Clinton during (and after) his terms in office - seem to think that liberals should dial it down a […]

Sand, Surf, Sigh

Tuesday, October 14th, 2003

The beach always seems like a good idea at first. But there’s the sun. So I’m hot and sweaty, and sticky if I’ve put on sunscreen. And I’m’ constantly moving around, chasing the shade. Then there’s the sand. Sweat and sunblock become a sort of glue to which the sand […]

Gone Tropical

Monday, October 13th, 2003

The Republic has relocated to Miami Beach for the week. But the posts will still be coming, in between dips in the ocean.
